They say you should never meet your heroes, but I've learnt otherwise. I had the great privilege of speaking to one of mine about his new book. Nicholas Meyer is a film director and author who has written a new Sherlock Holmes adventure, pitting the great detective against the infamous antisemitic tract, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Meyer is most famous, though, for his role in the Star Trek universe; he wrote and directed two of the classic Star Trek films, and in our conversation, I asked him about a little known connection between Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and the heroic Holocaust resucer Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who helped as many as 10,000 Hungarian Jews escape deportation to Auschwitz in 1944. Guy Stern grew up in Weimar-era Germany, but when Hitler came to power, clouds gathered over the lives of his Jewish family. He managed to escape to the US; tragically, the rest of his immediate family were forced to stay behind, where they were murdered during WW2. Guy served as an intelligence officer with the US Army, behind the front lines in Normandy, where he grilled captures German soldiers for information. After the war, his career in academia took off, and he taught German literature for many years. Today, he lives in Detroit and, aged 98, has published this memoir of his life, entitled Invisible Ink.
